German producers will have to suspend or even curtail industrial capacity if Russia and Ukraine do not renew the agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory, German Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck said at the East German Economic Forum in Bad Saarow.
According to him, the authorities should avoid “repeating the same mistake” and not expect that the economy will not suffer without precautions to ensure energy supplies, reports Bloomberg. Habek added that “there is no reliable scenario for the development of events.” He estimates that additional capacity, including a planned liquefied natural gas terminal on Germany’s north coast, which has drawn opposition from local residents and environmental groups, will be needed to maintain supplies to both East Germany and Eastern Europe.
Habek also recalled that the requirements for EU countries to share the burden of gas shortages in Eastern Europe must be respected, which means that Germany must export gas to Eastern European countries to compensate for their shortage.
Recall that in the summer of 2022, the EU countries agreed to reduce gas consumption by 15% by March 2023. This agreement was later extended until March of the following year.
