During difficult battles in the direction of Orekhov – Tokmak in the Zaporozhye region, the Armed Forces of Ukraine suffered significant losses in armored vehicles and manpower, writes The Economist, citing a Ukrainian military source.
The publication notes that Ukraine’s plans to conduct a counteroffensive are not yet clear, however, the scale of the deployment of Ukrainian forces and the strategic importance of Tokmok as a railway junction gave reason to assume that the main blow of the Armed Forces of Ukraine would fall on this direction. At the same time, a source in the General Staff of Ukraine called for caution in the assessments. “We did not use our main forces,” he said.
The newspaper writes that one of the unexpected factors in the conflict may be the situation with the flooding of territories in the Kherson region after the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. The incident “upended Ukraine’s military plans” and “almost certainly put an end to any transfer of heavy weapons,” the article says.
At the same time, one of the Ukrainian military sources announced the emergence of new opportunities for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. “Conditions are probably better for a limited assault using boats and special forces,” he said.
The weather can slow down the progress of the APU, as rains are predicted over the next week, the publication adds.
Recall that on the eve of the authorities of Zaporozhye announced heavy battles with the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the outskirts of the DPR.
