Former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has been arrested as part of an investigation into the funding of the Scottish National Party (SNP), of which she was previously the leader. According to Sky News, Sturgeon is being treated as a suspect and is being interrogated.
Meanwhile, the Scottish police in the release does not name the detainee. It only states that a “52-year-old woman” was arrested on suspicion in connection with an ongoing investigation into the financing of the Scottish National Party.
A spokesman for the politician noted that Sturgeon “by agreement with the police in Scotland was present at the interrogation, where she was to be arrested and interrogated in connection with the Branchform operation.”
In addition, Operation Branchform was launched by the police in Scotland in 2021 in connection with suspicions of fraud in raising funds for SPN. As part of the investigation, Sturlden’s husband, former party chief executive Peter Murrell, and current treasurer Colin Beatty were arrested.
They were subsequently released without charge.
