The counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine can be considered successful if Kyiv manages to restore the borders of Ukraine before February 24, 2022, politicians from the European Union and the United States believe. However, they have little faith that this is possible, writes the New York Times, citing unnamed sources among European and American officials.
The EU and the US believe that Kyiv is unlikely to be able to push back Russian troops from key territories.
At the same time, Western countries believe that an attempted counter-offensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine may become decisive for the further development of the conflict – the result will determine the further course of events.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a counteroffensive, but could not complete the assigned tasks in any area. He also noted the courage of Russian soldiers, the correct command and control of the troops and the high efficiency of Russian weapons.
At the same time, CNN reported that Ukrainian forces have stepped up hostilities in the Zaporozhye region, but there is no talk of a full-fledged counteroffensive yet. The actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are probing the defense of the Russian Armed Forces for the presence of weaknesses and checking their combat readiness, the media pointed out with reference to the Ukrainian military. The publication also reported that this “reconnaissance in force” was large-scale and resulted in significant losses in equipment from the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
