Advent 2021: Importance of the Advent wreath and preparation for Christmas

Sunday November 28 belongs to the first of the two parts of Advent, accompanied by a marked eschatological character –related to part of theology–, which proclaims the coming of the Lord at the end of time. Several believers take it as a a good time for reflection and spiritual changes, as well as for family unity.

On the first Sunday, they are instructed to start a prayer without any lit candles. With a secluded atmosphere and little light, it is also advisable to place an image of the Virgin next to the crown, with a candle at her feet. From this candle you can take the flame to light the first candle in the crown.

The father Luis Espinoza, explain what “Advent is a time of prayer, offering for others, detaching oneself to give to others”. In addition, he recommends a few things to the faithful during this Advent season:

  • Confess
  • Not miss mass
  • Commit to the Lord in charity
  • Prioritize life purposes
  • Listen carefully to the word of the Lord.

Prayer for the first Sunday of Advent

Everybody: In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Monitor: Our help is the name of the Lord.

Everybody: That heaven made earth.

Monitor: We begin a new liturgical year with the season of Advent, a time of preparation and waiting. Lighting, week after week, the four candles in this wreath should be a reflection of our gradual preparation to receive the Lord Jesus at Christmas. The lights of the candles remind us that He is the Light of the world who has come to dispel the darkness. The green color of the crown symbolizes the life and hope that He has come to bring us.

Reader: Reading taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah: “Arise, shine, Jerusalem; your light comes and the glory of the Lord dawns on you. For look how darkness covers the earth, and a thick cloud over the peoples, but the Lord dawns over you and his glory appears over you ”.

Monitor: Who leads the prayer, with folded hands, says:

We gather for a few moments in silence, and bowing our heads, we are going to ask the Lord to bless this Advent wreath.

let’s pray

The earth, Lord, rejoices in these days, and your Church overflows with joy before your Son, the Lord Jesus, who approaches as a splendid light, to illuminate those who lie in darkness, of ignorance, of pain and of sin Full of hope in his coming, your people have prepared this crown with branches of the forest and adorned it with lights. Now, then, that we are about to begin the time of preparation for the coming of your Son, we ask you, Lord, Increase every day the splendor of this crown, with new lights, illuminate us with the splendor of the One who, being the Light of the world, will illuminate all darkness. We ask this for himself who lives and reigns forever and ever.

Everybody: Amen.

Monitor: We are now going to light the first candle in our wreath while we sing the first verse of –choose the appropriate song–. In this part, a member of the family can join with musical guitar chords to accompany the collective song.

Everybody: In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. (I)
