Obesity combined with weakening of skeletal muscle strength and volume may be associated with mental decline. This conclusion was made by scientists from the University of Pittsburgh, follows from a material published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

Scientists analyzed data from 1632 patients aged 69-79 years. The subjects recorded changes in intermuscular obesity of the thighs using computed tomography, and risk factors for dementia were also studied. In addition, the participants were asked to complete a mini-test on cognitive skills.

The results showed that an increase in muscle obesity from the first to the sixth year was associated with a faster and more pronounced cognitive decline in the future. No racial or gender differences were identified. Also, the likelihood of cognitive decline was independent of total weight, other body fat, muscle strength or mass, or traditional risk factors for dementia.
