Western countries are busy developing an optimal solution for Ukraine and are working on various options for providing security guarantees to Kyiv. This was announced by the former Assistant Secretary General of NATO Camille Grand, reports the publication Politico.

According to him, one of the options is “Ukraine’s entry into NATO, which implies an ironclad guarantee under Article 5, according to which an attack on one ally is considered an attack on all allies,” but giving Kiev simply “paper guarantees” is also being discussed.

A “Kiev Treaty” of security could be an option, Grand added. It provides that Ukraine’s allies will commit themselves to strengthening the country’s defense for many years, providing it with military assistance. However, this scenario also does not imply the imminent inclusion of Kyiv in the bloc.

Any options for guarantees will only be “interim” agreements until Ukraine joins NATO, Grand stressed.

Recall that Kyiv applied to join NATO in September 2022. Ukraine also proposed its draft security guarantees. Among the key guarantees were investments in the military-industrial complex of Ukraine, the transfer of intelligence data to it and the training of the Armed Forces of the republic under the auspices of the EU and NATO. The United States, Great Britain, Canada, Poland, Italy, Germany, France, Australia and Turkey should act as guarantors.
