If, after the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, the complete descent of the Kakhovka reservoir occurs, the bottom sediments of the reservoir with hazardous substances may be exposed. This will lead to disaster, says Alexei Medvedkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Physical Geography of the World and Geoecology of Moscow State University.

“The most terrible thing will happen if, when the reservoir is completely drained, toxic deposits will be exposed, which will become dusty. This is a real chemical bomb, ”said the environmentalist, quoted by MK.

He clarified that by hazardous substances he means heavy metals, oil products, pesticides, radionuclides and other pollutants. Medvedkov added that settled pollutants have accumulated in the Kakhovka reservoir – for almost 70 years of operation they have come there with effluents.

He also did not rule out the emergence of difficulties with the cooling of the Zaporizhzhya NPP reactors in hot weather. In addition, the discharge of water will contribute to the flooding of the developed territories adjacent to the Dnieper, while household garbage and other waste accumulated in settlements will be eroded and distributed along with water.

Recall that on the night of June 6, the upper part of the hydroelectric power station was destroyed as a result of shelling, the dam of the Kakhovka reservoir itself survived. It was noted that 14 settlements on the right bank of the Dnieper were under the threat of flooding. In the risk zone – 22 thousand inhabitants, specified the head of the government of the Kherson region Andrey Alekseenko. Groups of rescuers left for Novaya Kakhovka, Golaya Pristan and Alyoshki. The state of emergency has been introduced on the territory of the Novokakhovka urban district, the press service of the city administration reported. Authorities in Nova Kakhovka reported that residents of about 300 houses had been evacuated.

In the Kremlin, the destruction of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station was called a deliberate sabotage of Kyiv. The EU and Kyiv blamed Moscow for what happened.
