The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case under the article on a terrorist attack in connection with the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. As reported in the press service of the department, the destruction of the object occurred as a result of actions “on the part of the armed formations of Ukraine.”
The RF IC also establishes the circumstances of the incident and the amount of damage caused to the region. The actions of all involved persons will be given a legal assessment, assured the department.
According to the head of Novaya Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontyev, the destruction of the infrastructure of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region has led to an increase in the water level already to a maximum level of 11 meters. Local authorities hope this is “peak level”. Leontiev noted that all residents of the territories that were flooded were taken out, buses are ready for evacuation. There is no data on the dead, but some residents had to be hospitalized.
Recall that on the night of June 6, the upper part of the hydroelectric power station was destroyed as a result of shelling. According to Leontiev, the valves at the station were destroyed due to shelling. As a result, water began to be discharged uncontrollably downstream.
Both Russian and Ukrainian authorities have announced an evacuation, RBC reports. In Ukraine, problems with water supply were reported in upstream cities, in particular in Krivoy Rog.
In turn, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of blowing up the dam, calling the incident a terrorist attack. In the EU, the blame for the destruction was also placed on Moscow.
The Kremlin denied the allegations and said that what happened was a “deliberate sabotage” by the Ukrainian side.
Meanwhile, experts say that if, after the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, the Kakhovka reservoir is completely drained, the bottom sediments of the reservoir with hazardous substances may be exposed. This, in particular, was said by Alexei Medvedkov, Associate Professor of the Department of Physical Geography of the World and Geoecology of Moscow State University.
According to him, the worst thing will happen if the full descent of the reservoir exposes toxic deposits that will become dusty.
