China is carrying out dangerous interceptions of US and allied aircraft legally flying in international airspace. The accusation was made by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin during a security conference in Singapore, a statement published on the Pentagon website.
He added that China refuses to improve crisis management mechanisms. Lloyd also called open lines of communication between US and Chinese defense secretaries vital.
“I am deeply concerned about China’s reluctance to engage more seriously on better mechanisms to prevent crises between the armed forces of the two countries,” the minister said, declaring the United States’ readiness to talk with China about arms control.
Austin stressed that a conflict in the Taiwan Strait would be a disaster and assured that Washington is aimed at “preserving peace and stability” in the region.
The Pentagon chief’s appeal to the Chinese Ministry of Defense came against the backdrop of Beijing’s refusal to hold talks between the two ministers in Singapore, Kommersant writes.
