Tomorrow begins the sixth month of the year. Almost half of 2023 has passed and Ecuador is immersed in a series of decisions that have been made and will be made, which are changing the political course of the country, and with it the lives of its inhabitants.
Last Sunday, the priest of the parish of San Alberto Magno in Daule spoke about personal decisions in his sermon at 09:30. This column does not allude to that specific or religious issue, but it is appropriate to reflect on decisions that will have an effect on the community.
The new assembly will decide what to do with two reform packages sent by the inter-institutional table for security and the fight against crime
2023 has become the year of political decisions, many of which are unsuspected, which, although they were on the stage of democracy, reach citizens for the first time as an experience. Death on the cross led to the prediction of elections as a constitutional path and to a government without a National Assembly.
The decree signed by President Guillermo Lasso dissolving the legislature was the sole decision of the president and his advisers. Now the Ecuadorians will make other decisions: changing the administrative direction or maintaining the current line is in their hands, except for the fact that the executive power has not confirmed or rejected the candidacy for the elections on August 20.
The Electoral Disputes Tribunal is considering three appeals against the clock that demand respect for gender equality
On the democratic-election path, there are several pending decisions against time. One is in political parties and movements that have until June 10, eleven days, to report who will be their candidates for president, vice president and members of parliament. And there are only eight days left to register the alliance in the State Electoral Council.
Deadlines are running out, and trial balloons are being released on social networks, which, out of respect for voters and responsibility, must be defined and misinformation avoided.
Respect and political maturity towards Ecuador and its citizens is a decision that must be judged at the polls on August 20when the population will become the great judge of candidate politicians. (OR)
