American researchers reported that mosquitoes are attracted to a very specific scent of the human body, and they prefer to bite certain people much more often than others. It is reported by Gismeteo.
Scientists conducted an investigation, during which they selected a hundred hungry mosquitoes and released them at night, having previously agreed with volunteers who agreed to take part in the study.
Note that during the experiment there was no direct contact between insects and people, but a device imitating human skin was used, on which the smells of volunteers were already applied.
As one of the authors of the study, S. Rankin-Turner, said, mosquitoes were mainly interested in a group of people with a specific smell profile.
Blood-sucking insects were mainly attracted as a “victim” by those people whose skin contained a huge amount of carboxylic acids and acetoin.
At the same time, blood-sucking insects did not notice people who smelled strongly of eucalyptus due to a special diet. It turned out that its observance can almost completely get rid of mosquito bites.
The researchers hope that their experiment will help in the development of a drug to fight malaria.
