The maximum allowable number of employees of German diplomatic missions in Russia, introduced by Moscow, significantly limits the number of representative offices and organizations in the Russian Federation. This is stated in a release on the website of the German Embassy in Moscow.
They recalled that the Russian authorities, “going for an escalation”, notified the German government of their decision to establish the maximum allowable number of employees of German missions in Russia, thus significantly limiting the presence of German missions and organizations that existed for many years.
As explained in the diplomatic department, the relevant restrictions were established by the Russian Federation unilaterally and come into force in early June. They will affect not only employees of the embassy and consulates general, but also employees of German cultural organizations, which include representative offices of the Goethe Institute and German schools, the embassy said.
“This unjustified decision of the Russian government is forcing the German government to seriously reduce its presence in Russia in all areas,” the release notes.
The diplomatic department added that the German authorities would take steps aimed at maintaining de facto parity with respect to the Russian presence in Germany in practice.
Recall that on April 22, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the Russian side had decided to “mirror” the expulsion of German diplomats from Russia, as well as to significantly limit the maximum number of employees of German diplomatic missions in the Russian Federation.
