In India, an official drained a body of water in the drought-stricken state of Chhattisgarh to retrieve a dropped phone. According to The Indian Express, Rajesh Vishwas, 32, a government food inspector, was on vacation with friends on May 21 when he accidentally dropped his new $1,200 smartphone into a pond used to irrigate fields.

First, the man paid the inhabitants of a nearby village to dive into a body of water in search of the device. Two days of searching did not bring results, then the official brought a pump with a diesel generator to the pool and began to pump out water.

Over the next two days, Vishwas managed to pump out about 2.1 million liters of water, after which the media learned about his actions and the hype arose.

According to the official, the phone allegedly stored important government information. He also claimed to have received verbal permission to drain from the head of the local water department, who allegedly said the farmers would benefit from it.

However, former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Raman Singh said that the volume of water drained by Vishwas would be enough to irrigate more than 600 hectares of farmland.

Later, the official still found the phone, but it turned out to be hopelessly damaged. Vishwas himself was suspended for abuse of power.
