When preschoolers explore their bodies, the navel can become an area of increased attention, and in the most unpleasant scenario, it can threaten the development of purulent inflammation. Yulia Zotova, a pediatrician, told about this in an interview with Gazeta.Ru.
According to her, constant irritation of the skin of the navel causes redness and the formation of small abrasions around. As a result, interstitial fluid can be released to the outside and, when dried, crusts form. If an infection joins, then itching of the skin in the navel area may appear.
Zotova added that a deeper lesion of the skin, subcutaneous fat and blood vessels leads to bleeding and suppuration of the navel – omphalitis. She clarified that purulent inflammation begins with a bright reddening of the navel, then pain and swelling occur, and then a weeping area forms on the skin, after which severe inflammation can develop.
To eliminate omphalitis, the patient needs antibiotic therapy, the doctor explained. Zotova advised to carefully monitor the child’s hygiene, if abrasions or dried crusts are found in the navel, treat the skin with an antiseptic.
