German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will resume telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin “in due time,” he said in an interview with the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper, RBC reports.

He also said that Germany will continue to support Ukraine, while trying to “prevent a direct conflict between NATO and Russia.” Berlin will act “in close coordination” with partners. Scholz emphasized that “consistency” along the way is very valuable, despite the problems that have arisen because of the conflict.

Speaking about the plans of the United States and some European countries to supply Ukraine with F-16 fighters, Scholz noted that the Bundeswehr does not have such aircraft. “We must continue to act reasonably and in a balanced way,” he stressed.

The chancellor also commented on the prospects for a peaceful settlement of the conflict. According to him, “we can’t talk about concluding a kind of cold peace, for example, by turning the current sector of the front into a new border between Russia and Ukraine.” Scholz noted that the world should be “fair”, and the prerequisite for this “will be the withdrawal of Russian troops.”
