The Kiev City Council deprived the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU (1964-1982), Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1977-1982) Leonid Brezhnev of the title of honorary citizen. It is reported by RBC.
82 out of 91 deputies voted for this decision. There were no votes against, nine people did not participate in the voting.
By this decision, not only Brezhnev was deprived of the title of honorary citizen of Kiev, but also all the leaders of the CPSU, the Communist Party of Ukraine, the communist parties of the union republics of the former USSR, starting from the post of secretary of the district party committee and above. In addition, the Komsomol leaders of Ukraine, starting from the post of secretary of the regional organization, employees and agents of the KGB of the USSR and all the union republics of the former USSR, as well as those who graduated from higher educational institutions of the KGB of the USSR, except for technical specialties, were left without a title.
As a result, in the personal list of those who were revoked the title of honorary citizen of Kyiv, in addition to Brezhnev, there were five more people, including the Vietnamese revolutionary Truong Tinh (Dang Xuan Khu). “Especially for everyone, this is the leader of the Communist Party of the Republic of Vietnam. We had an honorary citizen of the city of Kyiv. Well, it happens,” said Volodymyr Bondarenko, secretary of the Kyiv City Council.
The title of “Honorary Citizen of Kyiv” was established in 1982 – according to the publication “Strana”, Brezhnev was the first to be awarded it. In 1981, he opened the monument “Motherland” in Kyiv. Brezhnev died the same year he became an honorary citizen of Kyiv.
