Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has officially announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination. It is reported by Interfax with reference to the Associated Press.

DeSantis’ decision became known after he filed an application with the US Federal Election Commission. He is expected to have an online chat with businessman Elon Musk later Wednesday and publicly announce his intention to run for the presidency.

DeSantis, 44, has been the governor of Florida since 2019. Prior to that, from 2013 to 2018, he was a member of the US House of Representatives from this state. He is considered the most serious rival of former US President Donald Trump among other Republican candidates.

Several people have already announced their intention to compete for the Republican presidential nomination, including Trump himself, South Carolina Republican Senator Tim Scott, former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, and businessmen Vivek Ramaswamy, Perry Johnson, as well as radio host Larry Elder.

From the Democratic Party, their candidates for participation in the presidential primaries so far have been put forward by the current US President 80-year-old Joe Biden, the nephew of the 35th US President John F. Kennedy Jr. and writer Marianne Williamson.

DeSantis is very popular, and according to the results of many polls, it was he who was in the lead in terms of sympathy for Republican supporters as a potential candidate in the elections from this party. He is a graduate of Yale and Harvard Universities and is a lawyer by training. From 2004-2019 he was in the US Navy.
