Russia will create an analogue of the online encyclopedia “Wikipedia” called “Ruswiki”. According to RBC, this was announced by Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications, a representative of United Russia Anton Gorelkin.

The creation of the service, according to Gorelkin, was announced during the Russian Internet Forum (RIF). “The creation of an analogue of Wikipedia has been announced. Which will be hosted on Russian servers and managed by a Russian legal entity,” he wrote.

The authorities believe that “Wikipedia” violates Russian law. So, the corresponding markings appear next to the links to the encyclopedia in the Yandex search results.

In July, Roskomnadzor ordered search engines to inform users that the US-registered NPO Wikimedia Foundation violates Russian law because Wikipedia does not remove “fake news about a special military operation in Ukraine.”

Since the beginning of the special operation, the Russian authorities have repeatedly had complaints about the work of the encyclopedia. Instead of Wikipedia, the authorities recommend using the domestic Knowledge portal, which operates on the basis of the Great Russian Encyclopedia, Maksut Shadayev, head of the Ministry of Digital Development, said. In August 2022, Gorelkin announced the launch of another analogue of Wikipedia, the Runiversalis encyclopedia. The service interface is similar to the Wikipedia interface.

The Mintsifra has no plans to block Wikipedia, Shadayev said. The Kremlin, in turn, said that Russia needs to create its own analogue of the encyclopedia before closing access to it.
