In the Austrian city of Braunau, Adolf Hitler’s birthplace will host human rights training for the police. It is reported by RBC with reference to the ORF TV channel.
According to the TV channel, the reconstruction of the building should begin in the fall to adapt it to the needs of the police. The expert commission, which dealt with the fate of the house, ruled out the demolition or the creation of a memorial on its basis.
What will happen to the building has long been decided. In 2016, the Austrian authorities took control of it after years of disputes with the last owner, Gerlinde Pommer, whose family has owned the house for about a century. Before that, the woman was paid about €5,000 a month, and the house was used as a center for people with disabilities.
In 2019, the house became the property of the government, and the owner was given compensation in the amount of €810,000. The country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that it intended to reconstruct it into a police station. The agency stated that “the future use of this house for the needs of the police should clearly demonstrate that this building will never again be reminiscent of National Socialism.”
