The Armed Forces of Ukraine (UAF) did not participate in the penetration of saboteurs into the Belgorod region, although they supported them and defended the Ukrainian border, a senior Ukrainian official told The New York Times (NYT) on condition of anonymity.
According to the source of the publication, the Armed Forces of Ukraine covered the border of Ukraine “in case of a counterattack”, but there were no Ukrainian soldiers among the members of the sabotage group. There were losses in the structures involved in the attack, but “not such as to affect their combat readiness,” he added.
The newspaper notes that the Freedom of Russia Legion claimed responsibility for the attack (recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in the Russian Federation) and the “Russian Volunteer Corps” (RDK), in which the Russians are fighting.
The Russian Ministry of Defense, in a message about the defeat of the saboteurs, stated that a “unit of a Ukrainian nationalist formation” had invaded the Belgorod region.
Recall that the Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov reported on the penetration of a group of saboteurs into the Grayvoron urban district on May 22.
