The main causes of traffic accidents.

Guayaquil, one of the commercial cities of the country, has a high flow of vehicles on a daily basis. In a pandemic context, traffic jams occur in different areas of the city.

The 98% of traffic accidents in Guayaquil has its origin in six causes, according to a count carried out by the Transit and Mobility Agency (ATM).

1. Speeding

Exceeding the speeds established by the authority has left a total of 1,653 (44%) accidents in the city, about half of the general total. The Guayaquil ATM informs that the speed limits are the following:

  • 100 km / h on roads
  • 90 km / h on perimeter
  • 50 km / h in urban areas
  • 20 km / h in school zones

2. Not respecting traffic signs

815 accidents have been registered, equivalent to 21% of traffic accidents. According to the ATM Statistics Directorate, there are controls, signage, the city drawn and delineated, but the signage is not followed.

3. Sudden lane change

The traffic authority has reported 441 accidents due to sudden lane changes by drivers in 2021. On many occasions, drivers do not make proper use of their directional lights. There has also been disrespect for the signs marked on the road, especially on elevated bridges, which indicate with dotted lines that it is possible to change lanes or a continuous line that prevents lane change.

4. Driving under the influence of alcohol

Another of the causes that are on the list of the Traffic and Mobility Agency is driving under the influence of alcohol or other stimulants. 11% have caused accidents under this cause.

5. Do not keep lateral distance between vehicles

By not respecting the lateral circulation space, friction between vehicles can occur, especially in streets, major avenues and uneven bridges where the circulation space can become narrow. 5%, which is equal to about 200 accidents, falls into this category.

6. Space between cars

Do not keep a safe distance when driving with other vehicles, whether they are cars or motorcycles. The appropriate distance should be at least 10 meters if you are riding at an average of 30 km per hour, to avoid sudden braking. The distance should be measured according to the speed limit, to avoid accidents.
