Negotiations on the US national debt ceiling with President Joe Biden have been productive, but no agreement has yet been reached. According to Interfax, this was stated by Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy.
“Tonight’s tone was better than any other time we had discussions,” McCarthy told reporters after the meeting.
According to him, he and Biden “had a productive discussion.”
“We don’t have an agreement yet,” the speaker said.
At the same time, he added that he was ready to talk with the US president every day until both come to an agreement.
“We both agree that we want to be able to come to an agreement,” McCarthy said. “I believe that we can do it,” he said, while the speaker added that there would be no defense cuts.
McCarthy also said he would “never” propose to the House of Representatives to increase the national debt ceiling and, in his opinion, it is time for lawmakers to “reverse the direction” of federal spending.
The US President also called the last meeting with McCarthy “productive”.
“I have just concluded a productive meeting with Speaker McCarthy about the need to avert default and avoid catastrophe for our economy,” Biden said in a statement released by the White House.
According to him, they agreed that “default is out of the question.”
“Despite the differences, the speaker and I (…) will continue to discuss ways forward,” Biden said.
