The situation with nuclear safety at the Zaporozhye NPP is extremely unstable, Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, wrote on his social media page.
“In the morning, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was disconnected from external power supply for the seventh time during the conflict and was forced to switch to emergency diesel generators. The situation with nuclear safety at the plant is extremely unstable,” he stressed, adding that “this situation cannot continue” and an agreement must be reached to ensure the safety of nuclear power plants.
The Washington Post, in turn, reports that Grossi developed a draft agreement on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant to ensure the safety of the power plant in the run-up to the Ukrainian counteroffensive. According to the publication, the proposed plan contains five principles: a ban on placing heavy military equipment and military personnel at the station; a ban on firing from the territory of the nuclear power plant and in its direction, including a ban on attacking the plant personnel; protection of all safety and security systems at nuclear power plants; protection of all external transmission lines and monitoring of compliance with the above principles. An unnamed Russian diplomat told the publication that Moscow had no objection to the proposed plan.
On the morning of May 22, the power supply of the Zaporozhye NPP was switched to diesel generators. The reason was the shutdown of the high-voltage power line (750 kV Dneprovskaya). At the nuclear power plant, they clarified that the radiation background is normal.
