On Tuesday, May 16, Las’s opponents brought him to the brink of losing power due to the impeachment process against him, having an overwhelming majority in the National Assembly, which was proven on Sunday, May 14, in the appointment of those who led it, without the support of the limits and conditions that the Constitutional the court made the case. In addition, there would be pressure on the Office of the Comptroller and the removal, in the impeachment process, of Diane Salazar, the state attorney general.

The opposition also tried to gain control of a larger area of power, in order to obtain annulments in court processes, the removal of glosses and other decisions, thus gaining control of the central government in the 2024 elections.

The mention of the possibility of crucifixion was met with derision, it was said that due to the weak acceptance of Las’ administration in the public, he would not dare because the mobilization would be overwhelming for him to leave. – He would lie down on the street. What they did not think was that the low acceptance of the president, due to the mistakes he does not deny, and due to the violence of organized crime and the drug market that Lasso faced, was surpassed by the discrediting of the Assembly due to the way of opposition, due to multiple obstacles, due to mediocrity in interventions and management, with exceptions that existed in various blocs, with some reprehensible unique behaviors, such as that of the member of parliament Peter Cal Caisalitino, arrested in flagrante delicto on April 26, 2023 in a hostel in Quito, for taking a 19-year-old girl, to whom he offered a job and would like to rape her. Released in shackles, he broke it and escaped, only to be recaptured later.

On the night of May 16, the discussion for the dismissal was interrupted to continue the next day. At dawn on the 17th, the Legislative Palace was surrounded by the public, and at 07:00 a presidential decree on crucifixion was announced, which closed the Assembly.

And on the street? Nothing happened. The country at the transition was saturated with confrontation.

Lasso has an exceptional opportunity to rule, for more or less five months, without obstacles to the passing of laws through emergency decrees – only with the declaration of constitutionality by the Constitutional Court – and without harmful supervision. You would be wrong if you decide to run for office. Let the emergency decree laws be well-motivated and sound.

That the phraseology of the unity of different political actors be honest, that it does not imply “unity, but I am a candidate”, or something similar, as well as the practice of numerous candidates with the expectation that “we are joining together for the second round”.

There are questions that must be unavoidable. What will happen to dollarization? Because we must not return to the discourse of sovereign currency, to resemble Venezuela, with its multiple devaluations.

What will happen to external and internal debt? It would be foolish to assume that a country must always be delinquent.

Will there be agreements and the practice of extradition when necessary, without pretense of sovereignty? (OR)
