The decisions taken at the G7 summit are aimed at the double deterrence of Russia and China. According to RBC, this was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during his speech at a meeting of the Assembly of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy.
“The task was set loudly and openly: to defeat Russia on the battlefield, but not to stop there, but to eliminate it as a geopolitical competitor. <…> Look at the decisions that are being discussed and adopted today in Hiroshima, at the G-7 summit, and which are aimed at double containment of Russia and the People’s Republic of China,” Lavrov said.
He noted that Russia has many allies and like-minded people. “Here you need to understand very well that we are not promoting hostility towards anyone,” Lavrov said. “We are forced to respond, firmly, on principle, consistently to the war declared on us.”
According to the G7 joint communiqué released on May 20, China must put pressure on Russia to end its military operation in Ukraine and withdraw its troops from the country “completely and unconditionally”.
The G7 summit takes place May 19-21 in Hiroshima.
