The G7 countries, together with partners, have received a “window of opportunity” thanks to the current relations of Russia and China with the developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America, called the global South. According to RBC, this was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at the G7 summit.
The pandemic and the Russian military operation in Ukraine have had a strong impact on the global economy, especially in the global South, while many states in the region are looking for opportunities for sustainable development, she said. She recalled that China’s Belt and Road Initiative looked like a tempting offer, but many countries in the South have experienced bad partnerships with China.
“They took Chinese loans and ended up in a debt crisis. And all that Russia can offer these countries is weapons and mercenaries,” von der Leyen said.
She urged advanced economies to offer partnerships to the global South, but action must be “quick and concrete”.
The division into the global North and South is not strictly geographical, the division is more along the economic development of states. Thus, the developed states of the North include the USA, the countries of the European Union, Australia, Hong Kong, Russia, Israel, Ukraine, New Zealand, etc. The developing states of the South traditionally include all countries of Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and Oceania, in particular: Chad, Indonesia, Pakistan, Mali, Congo, Vietnam, Samoa, Cuba, etc.
