Magazine foreign affairs Its title is “Non-aligned world, the West, the rest and global disorder”. An interesting perspective, which makes me think back to what has happened in international relations and its effects on societies and people.
After two world wars, which claimed millions of lives, nation states were destroyed, and the geopolitical map was configured according to the wishes of the victors. A phase of peace came, which made it possible to cement new global relations.
In the history of these 75 years since the creation of the United Nations, Ecuador has been present with a very dignified role and based on principles, such as the non-acceptance of the use or threat of the use of force, the acquisition of territory by force, the realm of peace and the search for sovereign and dignified international relations.
After the Second World War, the victorious powers entered into nuclear and conventional geopolitical competition, generating military alliances, such as the Warsaw Pact and the North Atlantic Treaty, which are still in conflict militarily and economically. Every sphere of influence demands loyalty under the premise of “you’re with me or you’re against me.”
In the 1960s, the Non-Aligned Movement was created to bring about the third way, multilateralism, precisely to avoid involvement in the politics of blocs in the Cold War. I had the honor of being the president of the Political Committee of the Non-Aligned Movement on three occasions, and in all of them we tried to advance the search for solutions and present alternatives to these power conflicts.
Countries must realize that in a conflict between rival powers, third parties who have little or nothing to do with the dispute may be harmed. Both sides use belligerent narratives and seek to force others to join their positions. When the crisis ends and interests and mutual benefit prevail again, the whole problem is overcome and even forgotten. Remember the African proverb that says that when two elephants fight, the only one that gets hurt is the grass.
Today, we are faced with a reversal of the conflict of world powers, the invasion of a permanent member of the Security Council on another member state of the United Nations, the segmentation of the international system into military and regional alliances that divide the world and the empire. conflict to resolve what could be done at the negotiating table.
In a world where globalization and globalization are in crisis, where the interests of the most powerful prevail and where the decisions of a minority group have a disproportionate influence on the other constituents of the United Nations, it is necessary to promote an intelligent policy of independence, where we should allow our interests to prevail and not be overpowered by the interests of others. Balance is essential in our international relations, for which the north is the defense of the country’s interests, not those who impose their own on us. (OR)
