Russian President Vladimir Putin assured that the authorities would take steps to prevent “any element” from state-run media that would be associated with “xenophobia”. In particular, the head of state agreed with the proposal to ban the term “infogypsies” in the federal media.
During a meeting of the Council on Interethnic Relations, a specialist in the field of ethnography and history of the Roma, Nadezhda Demeter, expressed the idea of banning phrases in the media sphere that indicate nationality and have a “pronounced negative connotation”, as well as the word “infogypsies”. In her opinion, it contributes to the spread of “gypsy-phobia”.
Putin responded by saying that it is not easy to exert an appropriate influence on the blogosphere, but with respect to state-owned media, “it definitely absolutely needs to be done.” He assured that the authorities will take into account the proposal.
