Support for Sweden’s membership in NATO continues to grow, since 2022 the share of supporters of joining the alliance has increased by 13%. This was reported by TASS with reference to a public opinion poll conducted by the sociological center “Sifo” in May among 1 thousand inhabitants of the kingdom.
In May 2022, 51% of respondents were in favor of joining the alliance, 21% were against and 28% were undecided. In 2023, support for membership increased to 64%, the number of opponents decreased to 19%, the number of doubters decreased to 17%.
In the spring of 2022, then-Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and the Social Democrats changed their position and decided to support the bid for NATO membership. In May 2022, 41% of the members of the Social Democratic Workers’ Party of Sweden supported joining NATO, 38% were undecided on their choice of position. In May of this year, 67% say “yes”, the number of those who hesitate has dropped to 19%.
Sociologists also noted an increase in the number of women who have decided on the issue of joining the alliance. If a year ago the number of doubters was 38%, today this figure is 21%.
