U.S. officials have warned UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan that cooperating too closely with Russia and China on military matters, including intelligence, would jeopardize relations with the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources.

According to one of the interlocutors of the publication, the UAE president has improved relations with Moscow and Beijing in recent years, which “spoiled” the UAE’s relations with Washington. However, in recent months, the sheikh has consulted more frequently with US officials on Russia and China issues, and the UAE’s relations with the US are improving, the source added.

At the same time, WSJ interlocutors from the circle of UAE officials said that Nahyan does not believe that ties with Washington exclude relations with Moscow and Beijing.

The UAE is trying to remain neutral on the conflict in Ukraine. Abu Dhabi did not join the sanctions against Russia, despite pressure from Western countries, and also offered its services as an intermediary in a peaceful settlement of the crisis.
