Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday evening. It is reported by TASS.
According to the island’s Central News Agency, this is the first visit to the island by a former head of the British cabinet since 1996.
Truss arrived on the island in the status of a member of the House of Commons of the British Parliament. Taiwanese foreign minister Joseph Wu (Chinese name Wu Zhaose) met her at the Taipei airport. As Truss noted, she had long wanted to visit the island, but could not because of her work in the British cabinet.
According to the agency, during the visit, Truss will hold meetings with officials, as well as representatives of business and scientific circles. She will also speak at an event for Taiwanese-sponsored think tank Prospect Foundation, which was designated by Beijing in April.
The message from the island’s foreign ministry did not indicate whether the Truss program envisages a meeting with Taiwan’s chief of staff, Tsai Ing-wen.
Truss served as prime minister from September to October 2022: on her 50th day in office, she announced her resignation, entering the history of the country as the head of the cabinet with the shortest tenure. Truss’ trip to Taiwan will last until May 20.
Before her, the last former British prime minister to visit Taiwan was Margaret Thatcher (head of the Cabinet from 1979 to 1990), who visited Taiwan twice in 1992 and 1996.
