The European Union regrets that Georgia has not joined the European sanctions against the Russian aviation sector and is restoring air traffic with the Russian Federation. According to Interfax, this was stated by the official representative of the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, Peter Stano.
“This decision of the Georgian authorities raises concerns about the path of Georgia’s accession to the European Union in terms of complying with the decisions in the field of foreign policy pursued by the EU, as provided for in the association agreement,” he said at a briefing in Brussels.
According to Stano, Georgia has followed about 40% of the EU’s decisions on foreign and security policy, which is already low compared to 31% this year. “We regret this,” he said.
Borrell’s spokesman added that this week “a UN specialized agency, the International Civil Aviation Organization, has been in contact with the Georgian authorities to discuss the topic of the security of the Russian aviation sector and Russian aircraft.”
On May 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree on lifting restrictions on flights to Georgia, which have been in force since July 2019. It also became known that Russia, from May 15, 2023, will cancel the visa regime for citizens of Georgia, with the exception of persons entering the Russian Federation for the purpose of labor activity.
