The conferences and activities will take place in the Manabi capital until Friday, November 26.
In the capital of Manabí, the Meeting of Sustainable Cities and Urban Agenda 2021 is held, which begins today November 24 with debates on water, sanitation, development poles, logistics, agro-industrial axes, urban planning, and the agenda around climate change.
The conferences and activities that will last until Friday, November 26, are expected to be attended by more than 15 mayors, 7 prefects of the country, international experts in land planning and urban planning, and 12 international cooperation and financing organizations, such as the Inter-American Bank of Development (IDB), the United Nations Development Program, Germany’s GIZ Cooperation, UN Habitat, Development Bank of Latin America-CAF, Capital Cities against Climate Change (CC35), French Development Agency (AFD), Organization World of Cities and Platforms, Commercial Alliance of the Americas and Ichtion Foundation.
In the Paraninfo of the Technical University of Manabí (UTM) in Portoviejo the keynote lectures, specialized panels, and the exhibition of projects will be held. The opening is at 2:00 p.m.
The theme of the opening day will be urban development and planning; the green pact and economic reactivation. On November 25, it will be about financing for development; water and sanitation. The closing day will address logistics and development poles, according to Juan Carlos Mendizábal, general director of the event.
The conferences will be transmitted by digital platforms, via Zoom, Facebook Live, and Instagram from the website www.xpocorp.com and the Facebook Fan page “Meeting of Sustainable Cities and Urban Agenda” with links from the electronic pages and networks of the Municipality from Portoviejo, host of the meeting, and other organizations.
In addition, alternate social and cultural events will be held in other spaces of the Manabi capital such as tours of the city, artistic presentations in parks such as Las Vegas and La Rotonda and what is called “live street” during the nights of November 24 and 25 ( open to the public).
The meeting is preceded by the United Nations (UN) Habitat III Conference held in Quito in 2016 on Sustainable Urban Development.
At that time, the member countries of the UN, including Ecuador, committed to the guidelines of the New Urban Agenda 2030 in order to achieve strategic urban planning of their cities and natural environment, mobility, land use, value of what public, promote decentralization, organization of cities and strengthening of institutions, among others.
Daniel Carofilis, municipal coordinator for Cooperation and Investments, highlights that hosting the event is “a recognition of the work that the city has done, taking into account the success it has had with international cooperation and financing organizations. As well as the concrete interest of the rest of the Municipal and Provincial Decentralized Autonomous Governments that will come to know how Portoviejo has done it and how far it is going ”. (I)
