Investigators of the Russian FSB have charged Robert Shonov, a former employee of the US Embassy in Russia, with cooperation on a confidential basis. According to TASS in law enforcement agencies, the accused was chosen as a measure of restraint in the form of detention.

“In the course of operational-search actions, law enforcement agencies, with the support of Russian FSB officers, detained Robert Shonov in Vladivostok. After interrogation, he was charged with committing a crime under Art. 275.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Cooperation on a confidential basis with a foreign state, international or foreign organization”). Arrest was chosen against the accused, ”said the source of the agency.

Shonov faces up to eight years in prison. The accused is in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center.

Article 275.1 on secret cooperation with foreigners against the security of the country appeared in the Criminal Code last summer as an addition to Article 275 (high treason).
