Germany will send Ukraine a large batch of military equipment worth 2.7 billion euros. The announcement could be made on May 14, at the same time that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is being awarded the Charlemagne Prize in Aachen, Der Spiegel writes, citing sources.
According to the interlocutors of the newspaper, the Ukrainian army will receive 30 Leopard 1 tanks, 20 Marder infantry fighting vehicles, 200 reconnaissance drones, IRIS-T air defense systems, shells and vehicles for the functioning of logistics.
Zelensky said in mid-May that Ukraine would have to postpone the offensive due to a lack of armored vehicles, which could lead to heavy losses among the Ukrainian Armed Forces. “I think this is unacceptable. Therefore, we need to wait,” the President of Ukraine stressed.
The media note that Zelensky may not be able to come to Germany in connection with the offensive of the Ukrainian army, in which case he will speak at the ceremony via video link. The Charlemagne Prize is awarded for efforts in the unification of Europe and takes place in Aachen in western Germany.
