In Lithuania, a proposal was made to change the current Lithuanian version of the name of Kaliningrad (Kaliningradаs) to Karalyaučius (Karaliaučius). According to RBC, Polish Conservative deputies addressed the State Commission on Language with such an initiative.
They explained this by the fight against “Russification”. In their opinion, the change of the name in the Lithuanian language “will return the Baltic linguistic identity to this region.”
The publication indicates that Lithuanians still write the name Karalyauchus near Kaliningrad on signs in the border regions of the republic. Local residents also call other cities in the Russian region in their own way: Neman – Rageine, Slavsk – Gastos.
Meanwhile, the press service of the government of the Kaliningrad region urged not to pay much attention to this initiative. The press secretary of the governor of the Kaliningrad region, Dmitry Lyskov, called this idea an attempt to “ride the Polish media trend.”
Earlier, we recall, the Commission for the Standardization of Geographical Names outside of Poland recommended using only the Polish name for the Russian city of Kaliningrad – Krulevets.
