On Monday, May 15, at 18:00, the mArs art space (3, Marsovo Pole) will host the opening of a personal exposition of St. Petersburg artist Elena Shchelchkova “Eve’s Daughters”. The exhibition, organized as part of the New Wanderers project, will last for two weeks.

Each exhibition of Elena Shchelchkova is an invitation to new artistic discoveries and a reason to be convinced of the wide range of the artist’s creative possibilities. Elena actively participates in the exhibition life of the city and her style, seemingly already unmistakably recognizable, is placed within the framework of expressionist art.

Indeed, expression, expressed in the freedom of line and spot, their spontaneity and dynamism, is one of the key features of Shchelchkova’s work, whether she works in the technique of oil painting, or refers to easel and printed graphics. Another feature is the corporeality and eroticism of her art, which is both archaic, wild, reminiscent of the mysteries of fertility and at the same time exquisitely refined, permeated with lyrics. To be in these two states at once means to be the daughter of Eve.

It was the erotic feeling, manifested directly (at the level of the plot) or indirectly (at the level of deep sensations), that became the leading motif of Elena Shchelchkova’s exhibition in the mArs art space. The aesthetic pleasure that the viewer receives from the weaving of lines that together form the body of a nude model is invariably accompanied by an awareness of the depth behind the motif.

This depth is achieved due to the fact that the works of Schelchkova always exist in two dimensions at once – a full-bodied, filled with erotic energy, and in a transcendental dimension, dreamy-unsteady and otherworldly. Such an unusual combination makes it possible to achieve a mystical and theatrical effect, and the artist becomes a director, letting us go behind the scenes of her unusual and beautiful world.

Elena Shchelchkova was born in Leningrad, lives and works in St. Petersburg. Graduated from the Leningrad Art and Graphic School. The acquaintance with nonconformist artists had an influence on the creative path. From the mid-1980s she actively studied ethnography and visited the storerooms of the Russian Ethnographic Museum. Conducts master classes on rag dolls and monotype graphic technique. Exhibited since 1985. Member of the Creative Union of Artists (IFA UNESCO) since 1997. Author of more than 30 solo exhibitions, performances and art projects, participant of exhibitions, art competitions and festivals held in Russia and abroad. He has an award in the competition “Plein Air in the Summer Garden”, publications in magazines, reference books, catalogs.

Entrance to the exhibition is free.
