A man from the Chinese province of Gansu has been detained on suspicion of using the ChatGPT artificial intelligence chatbot to create a fake story about a train accident. According to Gismeteo, citing Reuters, this is the first arrest in China related to artificial intelligence. In general, Beijing is tightening the rules on deepfake technologies.

On April 25, a fake story claiming that nine workers were killed in a train derailment in Gansu Province gained more than 15,000 views on social media, according to the Pingliang City Police Department.

China’s new anti-fake regulations, effective January 10, prohibit service providers and users from using such technology to create and spread false information.

According to a police statement, 25 accounts on the Baijiahao social network, owned by Baidu, immediately reported a fake accident.

The suspect, surnamed Hong, was identified and arrested for posting false information after police traced all the accounts and found that his company was involved.

According to police, Hong allegedly edited the news generated by ChatGPT and uploaded it to a platform owned by Baidu. The investigation is ongoing.
