The main goal of the US strategy on anti-Russian sanctions this year is to combat attempts to circumvent them, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said.
According to Bloomberg, Yellen made such a statement in the Japanese city of Niigata, where the meeting of the heads of the Central Bank and the Ministries of Finance of the G7 countries is taking place.
“Because these sanctions have an effect, Russia is trying to circumvent them. This year, the centerpiece of our strategy is to take further action to stop Russia’s attempts to circumvent our sanctions, ”the head of the American department emphasized.
As part of this work, Yellen proposed a three-pronged approach that included improving the exchange of information between countries that have acceded to sanctions, putting pressure on “companies and jurisdictions that allow or facilitate the circumvention of sanctions”, and cutting off specific channels that Russia uses to “equip and finance its armed forces.”
In April, the US Department of Justice announced a change in focus in the fight against circumvention of anti-Russian sanctions. Now, possible intermediaries, including financial advisers, as well as operations with cryptocurrency, have come under the close attention of the department. In particular, last week the US Department of Justice launched an investigation into whether the world’s largest crypto exchange Binance was used to bypass anti-Russian sanctions.
