With 88 votes from 116 representatives who attended the plenary session of the legislative body yesterday, the political trial of the President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso Mendoza, was approved. Ecuador not only witnesses the struggle for power, but also becomes its victim.

The means by which the impeachment is reached and the legality debate will be judged by history, which has not been generous in reviewing the ten years of instability that the country experienced from the overthrow of Abdalla Bucaram in 1997 to the fall of Lucio Gutiérrez in 2005, when his then vice president took over to ends his mandate in January 2007.

This is what comes after the political trial against Guillermo Lasso

Instability attacks democracy and thereby delays the solution not only of the most serious problems in the public sphere, but also in the private sphere.

The National Assembly does not enjoy the best reputation among citizens. President Lasso is not well received either. Both actors require corrections and awareness so that the country does not fall into a new period of conflict that, far from contributing to development, threatens to set back the economy when it is just emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, which was already cruel enough to Ecuadorians.

Correístas and the Government are weighing their forces in calling for the impeachment of President Guillermo Lasso

The productive sectors regret that the efforts of the Assembly are focused on the impeachment which creates uncertainty, leaving aside the priority which is security

Ecuador is faced with a political process that excites the opposition and demands the attention of the ruling party, but the citizens’ concern is how to overcome the security crisis that is engulfing them, how the unemployed can get a job, how to meet the basic needs and unsatisfied family health. Climate risk experts warn of a possible El Niño phenomenon that could affect agricultural production, housing and public infrastructure. Business growth is undoubtedly linked to stability and legal certainty. It is difficult to invest and create jobs in the midst of a political crisis.

The National Assembly and the executive should work together for the good of those who elected them. The state can no longer, it wants solutions, not instability and conflicts. (OR)
