The US State Department warned Tbilisi about possible sanctions in case of restoration of direct flights between Russia and Georgia. This is stated in the comments of the State Department edition of Accent.
The department recalled that a number of Western states, including the United States, prohibit Russian aircraft from entering their airspace.
“If direct flights between Russia and Georgia resume, this will raise our concern about the possible imposition of sanctions against Georgian airlines that will serve aircraft under import and export control,” the report says. The State Department added that now is not the time to “deepen relations” with Russia.
Recall that earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the abolition of the visa regime for Georgian citizens from May 15. By another decree, the president canceled the ban on flights of Russian airlines and the sale of tours to Georgia that had been in force since 2019.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili regarded the decisions taken by the Russian side as a provocation.
Meanwhile, the Georgian opposition held a protest action near the building of the Georgian Foreign Ministry in Tbilisi against steps aimed at bringing Georgia closer to the Russian Federation. The demonstrators also criticized those government officials who supported the abolition of the visa regime for Georgian citizens and the ban on direct flights between Tbilisi and Moscow.
