Sanctions for the St. George ribbon after the celebrations on May 9 in Moldova will be subjected to 180 people who came to the attention of the police. This is reported by TASS with reference to the General Commissariat of Police of Moldova.
“180 people violated the provisions of Article 365, paragraph 5 of the Code of Offenses of the Republic of Moldova. In 16 cases, violations were committed by officials, 9 of whom were deputies of the Moldovan parliament, 5 were officials from the Gagauz autonomy,” the report says. Reports of offenses were drawn up in relation to 15 people, the rest will be called to the police later.
The day before, the leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova, Igor Dodon, announced that the party would open a hotline to help people who receive a fine. According to him, the lawyers prepared all the documents so that no one was punished.
The decision to ban the St. George ribbon in Moldova was approved at the beginning of last year by the deputies of the pro-European Action and Solidarity Party. For wearing, displaying and distributing this symbol, fines from 4.5 thousand to 9 thousand lei (from $250 to $500) are provided for individuals. However, in April of this year, the Constitutional Court of Moldova ruled that punishment can only be applied if law enforcement agencies can prove that the use of the St. George ribbon was propaganda for war and aggression.
