Tremor of magnitude 4.5 in Quito; there were evacuations and general scare

The sidewalks and parks were occupied by people evacuating buildings.

At 11:03 on this Tuesday, November 23, 2021, a strong earthquake in Quito and its surrounding valleys. The shaking that lasted approximately 40 seconds alerted citizens, who they evacuated buildings and took up positions on the sidewalks and squares of the city.

As reported by the Geophysical Institute on its Twitter account, the earthquake was of magnitude 4.5 and the epicenter was Quito. A preliminary report said 4.8 but they later updated the report.

The glass of the buildings were moving with force, the drivers also felt the earthquake, the construction workers got out immediately.

Given the intensity and duration of the earthquake, people came out of the buildings, scared.

In the Valley of Tumbaco, some cracked structures were reported as a result of the earthquake. Furthermore, from preliminary information it is known that glass in some buildings was broken.

Several stones fell near the Oswaldo Guayasamín toll, from the Metropolitan Public Mobility and Public Works Company (Epmmop) reported that they are already cleaning the place. One vehicle was affected, there were no injuries.

What’s more, clouds of dust caused alarm in the citizens They began to share through social networks, however, the authorities reported that it was a fall of land from slopes on Interoceanic Avenue.

In the old bridge of El Chiche, on the same avenue, in the northeast of the capital, another collapse was also registered.

The mayor of Quito, Santiago Guarderas, reported in their social networks that activated security protocols in municipal institutions to attend emergencies.

The session of the Metropolitan Council that took place in the Municipal Palace was suspended and the evacuation of all personnel to the Plaza de la Independencia. While the session was broadcast live, the concern of those present in the room was heard. (I)
