Despite all the actions that the UN is taking to resolve the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible, real peace agreements are currently impossible, said UN Secretary General António Guterres in an interview with El Pais.
“Unfortunately, I believe that negotiations for peace are currently impossible. Both sides are convinced they can win.<…> At this moment, I no longer see any possibility for an immediate achievement – we are not talking about the future – a global ceasefire, peace negotiations, ”he stressed.
Guterres added that the UN is making every effort to achieve peace in Ukraine and maintains a dialogue with the parties to the conflict. In particular, the Secretary General recalled the role of the organization in the grain deal and said that preparations are currently underway for a new round of negotiations between the UN, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine. “We are doing our best to better respond to Russian problems. It is true that food and fertilizer exports are not under sanctions, but indirect obstacles remain, and we are trying to remove them,” he said.
