The Spanish Civil Guard detained a married couple who are suspected of robbing 93 churches in 82 cities across the country. It is reported by RBC with reference to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Spain.
The investigation believes that the detainees robbed churches in three regions – Cantabria, Asturias and Palencia, in order to receive money, including donations from parishioners. They also stole religious items for subsequent resale, the department noted.
During the investigation, the police came to the conclusion that the crime was committed by a married couple. She carried out the first robberies in December 2022 in several churches in Cantabria. At the same time, the churches that were planned to be robbed were picked up by a woman. The couple drove to the robbery sites in different cars.
After the suspects were arrested, their house was searched.
“During a search of the house, 140 church items were seized, including images, cases with oils, small boxes with keys to the caskets, reliquaries,” the report said.
Many small coins from church collections and donations from parishioners were found in the house. Also, law enforcement officers seized tools from the detainees, which, presumably, were used in robberies. Among them were found several crowbars, a jack, pliers, and a night vision device.
