The Foreign Ministers of the member countries of the Arab League (LAS) decided to restore Syria’s membership in the organization. Al Jazeera reports.
Note that Syria is one of the founders of the association, its participation was suspended in 2011 after the start of the civil war in the country.
The decision to return Syria to the League was made on the eve of the Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia on May 19 and against the backdrop of the normalization of relations between Damascus and other states in the region.
Meanwhile, AP points out, there is still no full agreement on the restoration of relations with Syria in the organization. Thus, the agency draws attention to the fact that representatives of several governments, including Qatar, were absent from the vote. The latter continues to support Syrian opposition groups and resist the normalization of relations with Damascus.
We add that the League of Arab States was created in 1945. Its founders were Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Yemen, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia.
