Ticks most often bite those who do not follow the precautions in nature. Vadim Maryinsky, a researcher at the Department of General Ecology and Hydrobiology, Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University, told Moscow 24 about this.
According to him, the greatest probability of meeting with an ixodid tick is not in the forest, but somewhere on the edge, in a field, when you walk through tall grass. The specialist recommended using special repellents in nature to protect yourself from a tick bite. This must be done strictly according to the instructions.
“It is important to proceed from what is written about the product in the instructions and about the time of its action,” Maryinsky explained. “You also need to remember that if you got caught in the rain or walked on wet grass, then you can assume that all the repellent was washed off your clothes.”
He also said that ticks crawl on a person from the ground or cling to him from grass or low-lying branches. Therefore, first of all, you need to pay attention to the lower half of the body in terms of repellent treatment. When going out into nature, it is recommended to give preference to light-colored clothing. “It is better if you wear light-colored pants. These ticks are easier to spot. Blood-sucking mites that live in the European part of Russia are quite slow. Therefore, if you regularly examine yourself, you will be able to notice in time and just brush it off, ”the entomologist explained.
The interlocutor of the publication advised the Russians to tuck their pants into socks. With this approach, it will be more difficult for the tick to get to the skin.
