The Council of the European Union approved the transfer to Kiev of 1 billion euros from the European Peace Fund (European Peace Facility, EPF), from which arms supplies are paid, for the joint purchase of ammunition and missiles for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (APU). It is reported by RBC.
“The Council of the EU approved a €1 billion aid package from the European Peace Fund, which will strengthen Ukraine’s military capabilities and resilience. <…> The assistance will be aimed at supplying the Ukrainian Armed Forces with 155 mm artillery shells and, if necessary, missiles, which will be jointly purchased by the EU countries from the European military industry,” the EU Council said in a statement.
According to the head of the European Union’s foreign service, Josep Borrell, this decision is “another important step towards the supply of more ammunition to Ukraine.”
Earlier, the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union announced the approval of this initiative. “The EU ambassadors approved a decision on support measures within the framework of the European Peace Fund to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine by allocating 1 billion euros for the joint purchase of ammunition and missiles,” the representative office said in a statement.
The EU created a peace fund in 2021. It finances military and defense spending in order to prevent conflicts and strengthen international security. In particular, in addition to Ukraine, the organization sends funds to Mozambique, Somalia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The fund’s total budget is estimated at €5.69 billion at current rates for the period 2021-2027, with an annual ceiling of €420 million in 2021 to €1.132 billion in 2027.
