In the St. Petersburg art space mArs (Marsovo Pole, 3) on Friday, May 12, at 19:00, a regular meeting of the Discussion Club of Daniil Kotsiubinsky “Why is everything wrong?” This time, its participants will try to find out whether it is necessary to censor the neural network. Answers to questions will be sought by the chairman of the board of the Association of Participants in the Market for Electronic Money and Money Transfers, a UN consultant on issues and digitalization, a member of the Expert Council on non-banking financial organizations of the State Duma Committee on the financial market, candidate of physical and mathematical sciences Viktor Dostov and a philologist, author of many journalistic materials in St. Petersburg, Russian and foreign media, post-graduate student of the Higher School of Economics Dina Toroeva.

The topic of a neural network that threatens to trap us all in its sticky cobweb paws and enslave forever, recently broke into the news top of the Runet: at the end of 2022, the long-awaited GPT Chatbot (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) appeared with an artificial intelligence developed by OpenAI. GPT is able to work in an interactive mode, answer questions and thus form original, at least at first glance, content.

The international community was alarmed in earnest.

The Future of Life Institute, which aims to reduce global catastrophic and existential risks for humanity, in an open letter called on all artificial intelligence (AI) laboratories to suspend the training of AI systems (superior to GPT-4) for at least 6 months . The authors of the letter believe that this time should be used by experts to jointly develop and implement common security protocols for AI algorithms. The authors of the document fear that the machines will flood the information channels with propaganda and lies (as if this is not the case now!). Among the questions they ask are: “Should we develop non-human minds that could eventually outnumber us, outsmart and replace us?”, “Should we risk losing control of our civilization?”

“This does not mean a pause in the development of artificial intelligence in general, but simply a step back from a dangerous race towards ever larger unpredictable black box models,” the letter, which had 1,400 signatures as of March 30, 2023, says. Among them are Elon Musk (CEO SpaceX, Tesla and Twitter), Steve Wozniak (co-founder of Apple), Evan Sharp (co-founder of Pinterest), Craig Peters (CEO of Getty Images), representatives of DeepMind and leading universities in the world.

The well-known St. Petersburg expert Viktor Dostov has just published a detailed text about the fact that universal fears of the neural network are greatly exaggerated:

Viktor Dostov’s opponent will be Dina Toroeva, who challenged the idea of ethical and, in general, any kind of control over the neural network in the article “Neural networks need to be immoral”:

Which of the two approaches – censored or uncensored – is more correct? And, most importantly, which of them is more useful for society as a whole and for each person individually? The guests of Kvartirnik will find out the answers to these questions.

Tickets for the event can be purchased on TimePad or at the box office before the event.
